Brickheart

Brickheart Library

This library complements existing websites such as Rebrickable and Brickset which prioritise completeness and historical accuracy, with detailed databases about the sets and their contents; building instructions and reviews.

The Brickheart library is an unofficial, curated digital archive that reimagines LEGO® history as a preplanned coherent design system. Instead of organising sets by official theme, the library groups sets based on subject matter:

Sets have been rebuilt around a unified parts palette, with revised inventories and focused builds that are practical to experience digitally. Minifigures and associated accessories may be listed as optional content but are excluded from the core inventory.

How have the inventories been revised?

Stickers and most prints are replaced with blank equivalents. POOP parts (Parts out of other parts) are replaced with brick-built equivalents using standard parts. Parts that are exclusive to a single set or theme have been replaced with functional alternatives. Inclusion of large moulded animals and other specialised parts are limited.

Why focused builds?

When creating a set the LEGO® design team have requirements to target a particular market segment and price point. They also must consider bag inventories, build order, pauses for play, minifigure exclusivity, etc.

These compromises are not required for a digital build. Subsets can be made into stand-alone builds and play only content can be dropped. Some real world interaction elements like stands and display hooks are also not required.

What is excluded and why

The library is deliberately limited to retired sets. Those that would be hard to build or don't make sense digitally have also been excluded:

  • Duplo, Quatro and Primo (they lack support in digital building libraries).
  • Electronics such as Mindstorms® and Power Functions.
  • Flexible parts (high memory requirements for digital building).
  • Builds featuring complex geometries, mechanisms and off-grid building techniques (that can be frustrating to assemble digitally).
  • Minifigure focused sets (posing minifigures digitally is hard).

As a result themes like Gear, Education, Bionicle and most modern Technic LEGO® sets are not included.

Who the library is for

Some people enjoy free-form building whilst others prefer to follow instructions. The Brickheart library includes simplified palettes of parts and suggestions of sets suitable for building digitally.

For those who prefer to build physically, the revised set inventories provide a way to build retired sets whilst avoiding rare parts.
